Egg donation

Egg donation is a procedure in which a woman donates her eggs to a recipient to enable pregnancy if the recipient does not have her own eggs available or her fertility is limited. Some women suffer from premature ovarian failure (POF) at a young age. Their ovaries are depleted early and no longer produce eggs. Genetic causes such as Turner syndrome can also be the reason. Alternatively, some women only want to have children at a more mature age, often with a new partner.
In these cases, egg donation, which has been permitted in Austria since 2015, offers the possibility of fulfilling the desire to have children.

Requirements and facts:

  • The donor is not anonymous in Austria, i.e. the child created by donation has the opportunity to find out who the genetic mother is from the age of 14.
  • The donor’s data must be submitted to the Kinderwunsch Institut Dr Loimer
  • The donor assumes no obligations towards children born from the donation. This is recorded in a notarial act in advance of treatment.
  • The donor must not be younger than 18 and not older than 30 years old.
  • The donor will be tested both genetically and in health (especially infectious disease)
  • The recipient of the donated egg cells must not be older than 45 years old.
  • Egg donation is subject to strict controls by the state authorities in order to prevent the misuse of human cells.
  • There is a ban on advertising and referral for donors, so there is an enormous shortage of potential egg donors.
  • Bring your donor: do you have a sister, niece or friend? This would be the quickest way to start treatment.
  • We exclusively offer local donors, the entire donation process takes place at our Kinderwunsch Institut.

Total donation

Total donation is a special form of assisted reproduction in which both the egg and sperm come from donors. This procedure is mainly used for couples or individuals who do not have their own high-quality eggs or sperm, or who do not wish to pass on their genetic material.

In total donation, the donor eggs are fertilized with the donor sperm in the laboratory, and the resulting embryo is then transferred to the recipient's uterus. The medical procedure corresponds to the usual IVF treatment, including hormonal preparation of the uterine lining and embryo transfer.

This procedure offers people who would otherwise have no chance of pregnancy the opportunity to become parents. Careful counseling is particularly important in order to clarify medical, legal, and ethical aspects. Total donation thus enables a safe, legally regulated, and individually tailored solution for those who wish to have children. At KIWI Dr. Loimer in Linz, we ensure that professional counseling on this topic is provided.
