Social freezing
Social freezing refers to the freezing of eggs or sperm for non-medical reasons, such as family planning or to preserve fertility in view of career or personal circumstances. This method has been in increasing demand for several years, as many women wish to postpone the birth of their first child until later in life. In Austria, however, social freezing, i.e., the freezing of eggs or sperm for non-medical reasons, is currently not permitted. Eggs/sperm may only be frozen for medical reasons, for example, before cancer treatment or other procedures that could affect fertility. Early consultation is therefore particularly important in order to discuss individual options and alternatives.
The procedure for medically justified egg freezing involves hormonal stimulation of the ovaries, retrieval of the eggs through a short puncture, and subsequent freezing by vitrification. This allows the eggs to be stored for years in virtually unchanged condition. If necessary, they can be thawed, fertilized, and inserted into the uterus.
Men can also preserve their fertility by freezing sperm—for example, before medical procedures or due to a progressive illness. Frozen sperm can later be used for artificial insemination or IVF to maintain the chances of pregnancy.
