In Austria, 2024 saw more children conceived through artificial insemination than ever before. According to the annual report, there were 22,218 IVF treatments, resulting in 5,630 pregnancies – an increase of around seven percent over the previous year. This means that around 5 to 8 percent of all births are the result of fertility treatments.
At the same time, the multiple birth rate fell to a record low of 4.2 percent, showing that modern IVF is being used in an increasingly targeted manner. Despite an overall decline in birth rates – the fertility rate in 2024 was 1.31 children per woman – reproductive medicine is making a measurable contribution to the number of births. Without it, significantly fewer children would have been born, according to the report.
A look at countries such as Denmark and France shows that easier access to and state support for fertility treatments go hand in hand with higher birth rates. Experts are therefore calling for access to reproductive medicine in Austria to be expanded in order to open up better opportunities for women and couples who want to have children.
