Single women in Austria are demanding access to medically assisted fertility treatments. The association “Solomütter by Choice” has submitted an individual application to the Constitutional Court. Currently, treatment is only permitted for married couples and people in partnerships, which the association claims is discriminatory and denies single women the right to family life.
Those affected must either remain childless or seek expensive treatment abroad. In several European countries, such as France, Germany, and Spain, single women already have access to such treatments, in some cases with the costs covered. The applicants are therefore calling for the law to be adapted to social realities and consider the current regulation to be unconstitutional.
